In the book Persepolis what causes the main character to grow up is being in the heart of the Islamic revolution making it hard to grow up to be a strong women since their arguing about is the religion going to take over the country making all women wear the vail or will it just return to normal this kind of improves her life while also ruining it.
one way that she grows up is because her mother takes her to an outdoor rally to see what shes missing out on being a women.
but it takes a big turn around from a peaceful rally to an all out massacre where alot of women get killed because the men of the religion refuse to let them not wear the Vail and she saw women and men getting killed right in front of her very young eyes .
also when she meets her uncle from Russia she becomes really attached to him and he lives with her for a couple days and she becomes like the daughter ha never had. (he has two daughters but they were left in Russia when he became a spy and traveled across the land.
in conclusion the reason than she grew up is because of all the war and loss of family made her int a stronger women with emotions of steel especially since shes been in the middel of all this war.
